Stay tuned as we add more information on Santa Cruz Mountain parks, hiking trails and outdoor recreation!
Big Basin State Park Facilities include: 200 campsites; some RV hook-ups, tables, fire rings, toilets, showers, store, on-road bicycles for rent, a visitor center, L'il Ranger program, camp fire program, and other interpretive events. Over 16,000 acres of park system, with 80 miles of trails, connections to Castle Rock State Park and San Mateo County Park Systems. Hiking, back packing, mountain bikes & horse trails. Large group campsites available. (Warning: Reserve early if you're able). Over a million visitors a year come to see the ancient Redwoods, some of which are over 1,500 years old. The park is world famous and rightfully so. It was almost destroyed due to clear cut logging in the 1870s. Thankfully an artist named Andrew P. Hill led the fight to purchase the acreage and establish California's first state park. There are abundant flora and fauna, but please do not feed the wild life.
Berry Creek Falls is the park's most famous attraction. It is the keystone of a series of water
falls which flow through the upper part of the basin. From park headquarters to the falls
and back is a rigorous 12-mile hike, or you can pitch your tent near the falls and return the
next day. The brave of heart can plan to start early for the full 13-mile hike from Skyline
to the sea trail. Look for the giant see-saw along the way. This hike ends at Waddell State
Beach.
Henry Cowell State Park Henry Cowell State Park covers roughly 1,800 acres. The main entrance (and headquarters) is directly off Highway Nine, just south of the town of Felton (see map). Park maps are available here. The campground must be accessed from the opposite side of the park, located directly off Graham Hill Road (see map). It offers 112 camp sites and has picnic tables, fire rings, hot showers and toilets. There are no RV hook-ups. Dogs are allowed in the campground but must be leashed. The San Lorenzo River runs through the park creating lush vegetation. The relative proximity to the ocean creates diverse topography, offering a wealth of flora and fauna. Hiking, cycling, horse-back riding and river swimming are all permitted in designated areas. Check with the rangers and your park map for details. Waddell State Beach (Big Basin Park) The Pacific coast entrance to Big Basin valley. Tent camping, hiking trails, back packing. Unique horse camping facility with excellent beach and mountain access. Bicycles are allowed on some trails.
