Guide to the San Lorenzo Valley & Santa Cruz Mountains

Railroad in the Redwoods

The first railroad in the area was built in 1875 and exists today as the Roaring Camp line to Santa Cruz. Southern Pacific connected that line to San Jose in 1880, and a spur to Boulder Creek was added in 1884.

The rail line was discontinued around the time of World War II. A replacement rail line is under discussion currently, which would use much of the old right of way.
